Periodontal (gum) disease

Periodontal (gum) disease is insidious. It's early form starts out as an infection called Gingivitis that starts out as plaque, an opaque film that hardens on the teeth to form tartar. As tartar builds up, it harbors bacteria that attacks the soft tissue around the gums. Left untreated, Gingivitis becomes Periodontitis, which ultimately destroys the tissue surrounding your teeth and the bone that holds your teeth in place. Aside from bad breath and gums that bleed, there are very few early indicators. The disease advances silently, often without pain, and before you know it, you are losing your teeth without warning.

Tooth loss is only the external symptom of gum disease. Researchers have discovered a link between gum disease and strokes, heart disease, diabetes - even an increased risk for pregnant women so it's more important than ever to catch it early. When your gums become frail, your entire immune system is weakened.

With all the advances in technology, it is easier than ever to fight and prevent gum disease. Be proactive about your oral hygiene by talking to us about proper care and cleaning before it's too late.
